Erick Erickson, is a douche

February 11, 2010 Leave a comment

In the event that you’re merely familiar with the sound of the name itself and not the differentiation in spelling…I don’t mean this one; in my opinion he actually contributed to society. I mean this one. Besides generally disagreeing with his conservative mental filter that spits out opinions that make me want to poke my own eyes out with a fork (eg. global warming is a fairy tale, it’s not okay to dissent against the Pope because good God-fearin’ Christians should hate them gays, eliminating co-payments for mammograms and pap smears is bad, and my personal favorite… feminists hate Pam Tebow and are all pro-abortion because they’re offended that a pro-life commercial (sponsored by an anti-choice, anti-gay organization) was allowed during Superbowl, To provide just a few examples.

I am capable of respecting someone despite whatever disagreement I may have with their opinions/views, etc. Erick Erickson appears to be an intelligent person, I’ve read his blog which contains his political views and he relays them in a well-formed way. I didn’t dislike him; until I read these ‘tweets’ in response to the Focus On The Families (note that I did not specify it as the “Pam Tebow” or “Tim Tebow”) ad for Superbowl:

  • that’s it?!?! That’s what the feminazis were enraged over? Seriously?!? Wow. That’s what being too ugly to get a date does to your brain 3:45 PM Feb 7th from TweetDeck
  • Thus ends the credibility of all pro-abortion groups. Thanks Mrs. Tebow for that. Ugly feminists return to their kitchens. #RSRH
  • That’s not smog in Miami. It’s bras burning from the sheer stupidity of the pro-abortion crowd’s reaction to the Tebow ad. #rsrh
  • Next the feminist groups will lash out at all the commercials praising manly men. They’ll trot out Lorena Bobbit to spade/neuter your man. 5:13 PM Feb 7th from TweetDeck
  • I have big fat zero respect for someone that resorts to this kind of primitive and obtuse method of responding to what someone else believes. Put simply, it makes someone sound like an absolute idiot regardless of how edited and polished they might come across in a blog.

I had read a pretty significant selection of varying articles, blogs, etc. about the whole F on the F ad drama prior to actually watching the ad. I did the same after watching the ad. Not one single thing I read decried either of the two actually involved in the ad for anything. In fact much of what I read had nothing to do with Pam Tebow at all; the “feminists” that even mentioned her specifically, applauded her for exercising her choice that was made despite medical opinion, about her own body and pregnancy (even though she’s a spokesperson for an organization that would love to take that very same choice away from women).

Via twitter Erickson simply demonstrated (in the most blockhead and imbecilic way possible) his ignorant inability to recognize the ad for what it actually was. A manipulative and duplicitous conduit (because it was portrayed in a very easy-to-swallow pill for all those watching the ‘big game’) to say the following:

    • We are against abortion
    • If you are a woman and you choose an abortion you are weak (you are not “tough”) regardless of the reason(s) why you might choose it
    • We were privileged for various reasons and the choice to have a baby worked out for us…therefore new life is a miracle and you should make it work for you despite whatever you might be struggling with and despite the circumstances that found you with new life

The ad in the way it was done was actually more ‘offensive’ to anyone than it might have been had the Tebows just been scripted to come out and say, “we’re against abortion”. That’s honestly beautiful…their story that began with a seemingly sad beginning and was probably very harrowing, has a happy ending and it’s a wonderful thing to share. But how easy is it to put that in a package that people want to open to serve F on the F’s agenda? Pretty easy.

I’ve been to the F on the F website and watched their videos of people’s stories and “miraculous” endings.

I’d respect the organization a whole lot more if they had a video about a woman that was raped and ended up pregnant and turned it into a “miracle” by having a baby. Or maybe if they had a video about a teenager that ended up pregnant that didn’t have such a supportive family that thought babies are a “miracle”. At the very least depict it realistically, because unintended pregnancies are not always the result of “misguided” teens that have loving, caring families to help make it a happy ending. And it’s not always a happy ending for women.

I 100% support another person’s right to have a different belief. But I have a lot more respect for it when it’s 1. realistic, and 2. not given in a way that disregards (see Focus on the Family) some and belittles (see Erickson) others.

Long story short…Erickson, you are a douche.

What A Stupid Thing To Say

    November 24, 2008 6 comments

I spent the day making soup (and I just have to say it is THE best soup ever…seriously), and doing laundry, and cleaning. It was nice. This evening I thought I’d watch a movie before turning in.

For some reason, at some point (I don’t watch a ton of tv, I’m a movie girl), I was watching something on MTV and thus, it was on that channel when I turned the tv on. Sweet 16 happened to be on and for the most briefest of moments I was captivized by the ridiculous decadence taking place on the show. My Super Sweet 16 is yet another MTV-Reality TV phenomenon whereupon we lucky viewers have the opportunity to watch ‘sweet 16′ parties belonging to celebrities, and various non-celebrities. The episode I was lucky enough to spot was TImbaland’s son’s party. It was ridiculous. There were tigers in cages, multiple rappers who took the stage to play blips of their most popular songs, belly dancers, and what looked to be 5,000 screaming teenage girls.

The segment that I caught featured various components of the 5,000 screaming teenage girls on camera verifying how “awesome” the whole thing was. One of the screaming girls actually said, on camera, “I wish my parents loved me this much!!”. Really? On national tv?

It bothered me because it was such a stupid thing to say. Had I been in her shoes and had said that I would have been mortified to realize what I’d said. I guess her parents don’t love her because they never made millions of dollars selling packaged rap to the masses and couldn’t throw her a party with tigers and belly dancers.

Ridiculous. I felt bad for her parents. I was pretty happy with my 16th birthday, I received a top of the line of quality flute and tickets to Pearl Jam, both of which I thought were “awesome”. I wasn’t sad that I didn’t have a tiger belly dancer party.

I was happy to quickly move on to the on demand free movies because the whole five minute experience was a horrid reminder of just how ‘out of it’ people are these days.

I made some damn good soup. Kait and bloody Andrew thought so too. :)

    Prior to getting married…

Make sure you’re ready to take the phrase “I don’t want to” out of your vernacular according to Phyllis Schlafly.

According to the “home-making”-psuedo-politician, women having happily participated in nuptial vows can not, by the very nature of the contract, be sexually assaulted by their husbands.

By getting married, the woman has consented to sex, and I don’t think you can call it rape.

Really? I suppose we should go one step further and theorize that when you get married it’s not up to you anymore whether you have kids or not as well.

The logic behind this astounds me. Not to mention the inner hackles that get upset when reminded that there really are people out there fighting for ideas like this.

I especially enjoy her ‘educated opinion’ on women with both children and a career…”While Schlafly said she has no problem with women raising a family and pursuing a professional career, she said they can’t be done at the same time.”

I wonder what her family thinks about all the idealist traveling she does for her ’career’?

I was sorely disappointed when I watched the news this evening for the first time in a long time

I probably had it correct with just not watching popular news and obtaining it through my own means (qualiy news, that is). Oh well. I had a good run. I just have to start it over is all.

It sort of started with a boo-hoo story about how "girls" are more likely to get into college because…they do better:

By the time college admissions come into the picture, many watchers of the "boy gap" agree, it’s too late for the lads to catch up on their own. Indeed, beginning in those formative K-12 years, girls watch less television, spend less time playing sports, and are far less likely to find themselves in detention. They are more likely to participate in drama, art, and music classes—extracurriculars that are catnip for admissions officers.

U.S. News reports that some colleges are now failing to admit appropriate women in lieu of admitting men in order to avoid a gender gap. Now…wait just a minute here. If memory serves there are European American men out there that at some point have felt that equal opportunity did them wrong. Interesting, how the tables turn, isn’t it?

It didn’t take long though, to take a dramatic turn into dog info. Not that I don’t love dogs (I mean, really…I have a zoo of them in my home). But are general statistics on dogs what should really be important in the evening news? Can people not find this stuff out on their own? As a matter of fact, can people not figure it out on their own for that matter? They felt it was important to tell whoever was watching this evening that labradors are the most popular dog according to the American Kennel Club. No shit. Again, not that I don’t seriously heart dogs…but aren’t there more relevant things people should know when they blithely tune into and space out on the news? News flash…they’re also one of the breeds with the highest incidents of biting humans; only because they’re so popular. That’s statistics. That’s not really newsworthy.

NBC News deemed it really important to add a piece on how to correctly pronounce "Nevada" so as not to offend the locals. Really? They’re responsible for the armpit that is Reno…but we should be primarily concerned on a Wednesday evening with how to pronounce the state name?

In conclusion, there was also a story done on abuse of power by an on duty officer. This was disappointing, not because it was reported on the news, but because it is just indicative of the question…as humans are we really capable in general of dealing with any type of power without abusing it? I realize of course that not all of those indowed with power abuse it…but for case and point, check out the Stanford Mock Prison study.

The news as displayed on popular channels is seriously disappointing in so many ways. It is precisely why that is not my main source of what is going on in the world.

If it were up to me

Everyone would be required to watch What The Bleep Do We Know.

There is no such thing as good or bad; we make things good or bad (I already knew that).

Most of us trap ourselves into an existence believing that there is no other…when actually there are millions of possible existences.

Everything we don’t want to know keeps us trapped where we are.

I’m going to start creating my own day/life/emotions rather than allowing other things to create them for me.

    Quantum physics rules. :)
