Thursday Thirteen #1

September 6, 2007 3 comments

Yes, I’ve done these before but it’s been forever and a few hours since I have and felt it was only fair then to start over at 1. I’m not so good on the follow through…like it’s not obvious.

Thirteen things I want for the impending birthday of doom on 12/1. (By doom, of course, I mean “30″)

1. To Not Be 30: Yah, I went with the obvious first. Best to just get it out of the way. If I was allowed to pick an age I’ve already been, seriously, I would probably pick 25.

2. A Planned Party: I do not, under any circumstances, want to be the one to plan a stupid party for this birthday. For some irrational reason it just feels sad to have to plan a birthday that I’m not all that excited about. Of course I will have to plan the family dinner thing where April is included as always (at Jaliscos)…I happily accept that. However, if it is left up to me, there will be no party, and I’m okay with that. I’m not kidding.

3. The DSM IV: I’m a huge geek. I’m okay with that too.

4. A Day Off: I suppose I’m cheating on this one because my birthday is on a Saturday this year…’day off’ is a given.

5. Shoes…Piles And Piles Of Shoes: What a wonderful thing that would be. Shoes.

6. 90210 On DVD: As shown here. Season 1, 2, and/or 3. I’m juvenile and that’s okay. It’s just not all that satisfying to rent them and know that I must give them back.

7. TV Armoire: Like these. There is nothing I hate more than seeing cords and such laying around everywhere in my living room. It’s clutter.

8. An A In Statistics: I realize this one is all up to me but I thought it deserved to be here too. If I can get an A in statistics then I can prove once and for all that I’m not really that stupid when it comes to mathematical stuff.

9. A Personal Human Alarm Clock: I cannot wake up in the morning. I just can’t. I try and I can’t. For my birthday this year I would like a human that wakes me up reliably every single morning. They could drive by every weekday, bang on my door, and then drive off. That would be fine.

10. New Job: Working on this one already really.

11. A House: I know…it’s just a wish list damn it.

12. Some More of These Reed Diffuser Things: They smell all good.

13. Tattoo, Or Maybe A Piercing Somewhere: Discreet and tasteful, of course…but just maybe I can force myself through a mini mid-life crisis now so that by the time I’m 40 I’m perfectly adjusted and avoid any freak outs.

I missed you Thursday Thirteen. (I must admit…some of these things, I really do want for my birthday…I realize that much of it is unreasonable. But then again, when did I ever claim to be reasonable?)

**Thursday 13** #2

Tttomb In honor of one of the things I love most in the world:

**13** Books Currently On My Shelf That You Also Should Read (in no particular order)

1. Cesar’s Way (Cesar Millan) It’s no joke, he really is a dog expert. This was most helpful for me in regards to control issues between Sadie and I. She thinks she’s in control of me, and I think I’m in control of her. We won’t explore how successful I’ve been in implementing his helpful truths about dogs.

2. How Can I Help (Ram Dass & Paul Gordon) About how to better be successful in our service towards others, whether in personal affairs or professional. And I quote:

It is to ourselves, then, that we must first look in our effort to see what limits the spontaneous expression of helping instincts. How does who we think we are affect what we have to give? How does this "delusion of consciousness" which "separates us from the rest", narrow the range of our compassion? What different understanding of our being might nourish and deepen what we have to offer one another? (p. 21)

3.Delta of Venus (Anais Nin) Because women breaking sexual rules is definitely sexy. And I quote:

In numerous passages I was intuitively using a woman’s language, seeing sexual experience from a woman’s point of view. I finally decided to release the erotica for publication because it shows the beginning efforts of a woman in a world that had been the domain of men. (p. xvi)

4. Barbie Unbound (Sarah Strohmeyer-photos by Geoff Hansen) Containing some of my favorites being safe sex Barbie, Pro-life Barbie vs. Pro-Choice Midge and P.C. Barbie Goes To The Co-Op.

Babrbie

5. When God Was A Woman (Merlin Stone) I think the title says it all.

6. All About Me (Me) Of course, the only way you could read my copy is by getting past me first. It’s one of those supreme ‘meme’ books. It was mostly completed by me in 2000. Example: Someone who should never speak at your funeral: Kevin P_____. Funny…this remains true 7 years later.

7. Lies And The Lying Liars Who Tell Them (Al Franken) I heart Al Franken. Seriously.

8. The Bust Guide To The New Girl Order From the editors of BUST Magazine, stories about men, women, sex, rights, feminist stuff and media stuff. I may just reread it.

9. How To Be A Help Instead of A Nuisance (Karen Kissel Wegela) There are a ton of people who should read this, really. How to listen, support and be present without being irritating.

10. On The Rez (Ian Frazier) A personal account of what’s left of Indians and the stories they walked here from.

11. Miss Manner’s Guide To Excruciatingly Correct Behavior (Judith Martin) One of my favorite parts:

DEAR MISS MANNERS: How do I introduce people who are living together but not married without embarrassing them or offending my other guests?

GENTLE READER: What type of entertainment do you give, that everyone’s sexual affiliations must be declared at the door? Introduce people by their names.

12. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings (Maya Angelou) She is one of my absolute, all-time favorite writers.

13. The Toughest Indian In The World (Sherman Alexie) Endearing short stories about Native American people in the everyday…also Sherman Alexie is a Spokane/Coeur d’Alene Indian!
